| John Vallender |
|
John’s particular interest is the application of high quality practical education in informal and community settings.
John moved from managing his family manufacturing retail business into formal education in 1975 where he gained 25 years teaching experience in inner city Further Education Colleges in Birmingham, as a manager and principle lecturer.
In 2000 John left formal education to set up Mayfly-Communications and to concentrate on authoring and publishing interactive e-learning resources to support learners following practical vocational studies.
In 2005 John was appointed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), on behalf of the Department of Health, to establish a quality assurance, accreditation and support programme for providers of community safety education in England. Known as LASER (Learning About Safety by Experiencing Risk), good LASER activities provide children with opportunities to learn how to recognise and deal with issues through simulation, role play and practical activity. The programme had more than 140 members representing some 200 events at which some 200,000 children each year learn about personal safety, health and wellbeing, citizenship and aspects of criminal behaviour.
In late 2008 was appointed to set up and manage the then Department of Children Schools and Families (DCSF) Child Safety Education Coalition (CSEC). The projects purpose was to contribute towards the British Government’s commitment to reduce the number and severity of unintended injuries being reported and admitted at accident and emergency departments in England. During his management and leadership the CSEC team gained valuable insights into what works when planning to change behaviour to reduce unintended injury suffered by children and young people. Central to CSEC’s success was its use of ‘high quality practical safety education’ in community and leisure settings. At the end of its funding cycle the CSEC network represented a coalition of over 120 leading safety organisations. |
